Frances Borden & Syd Symons Frances Borden, who has twice been a prizewinner in the BP National Portrait Awards, and Syd Symons, Head of Creative Arts at Gillingham School came together for the first exhibition of 2001 at The Slade Centre. ‘Face to Face’ provided an extraordinary insight into the work of these two artists, who first met when they exhibited together at The Black Swan Guild in Frome in 1995. While Syd Symons has managed to successfully combine his career in teaching with that of a professional artist, he has kept the two roles largely separate. But in January 2001 the boundaries between his two worlds started to blur. During January and February 2001, Frances Borden undertook a residency at Gillingham School. Both artists were genuinely inspired by each other and started to produce new work. Both were treading new ground, Syd in bringing together two aspects of his life which he has for so long kept apart, and Frances in moving outside the isolated world of her studio to work in the bustling atmosphere of Gillingham School’s art room. |

Frances described herself as being in a period of transition. For a number of years she had concentrated on a series of startling self-portraits, which won her a number of prestigious awards. But it was almost as though she had ‘Been there! Done that!’, and was looking for the next step. ‘Face to Face’ featured earlier work by both artists, work for which both have become known and respected. But it also included works produced during the period of Frances’ residency. At the end of the residency. Syd, Frances and a group of sixth form students from Gillingham School visited Venice for the Carnival, returning just in time for the opening of ‘Face to Face’.
