The Studio at The Slade Centre provides the perfect setting for exhibiting
contemporary art. For visiting artists it can both inspire and
promote creativity.

The Slade Centre has built up an enviable reputation for showing some of the very best works by contemporary artists from the South West and beyond. The gallery opened with a mixed show for Dorset Art Weeks in 2000 which acted as a signposting exhibition for artists in North Dorset. Since then The Slade Centre has regularly taken part in the county-wide open studios event and has established itself as one of the best exhibiting spaces in the area. This autumn The Slade Centre continues its successful exhibition programme with a number of solo and mixed group shows, culminating with a special event, ‘Picturing Christmas’.

A solo exhibition of paintings, prints and more by Julia Whatley opens on Thursday 13 November. Julia's drawings and paintings are captivating, demonstrating superb observational skills and a deep love of the natural world. There is a lightness of touch to her work which can be both joyful and inspirational.

This new exhibition,'Dancing with Cranes' celebrates the introduction of this iconic bird to the Somerset Levels. It includes a series of drawings and prints which feature both observational studies of cranes and more fanciful drawings to reflect the spirit of this beautiful bird. These works, many of which have never been seen before, clearly demonstrate Julia’s rare talent for capturing form and movement with a few delicate lines.

The exhibition opens on Thursday 13 November and continues to Sunday 16 November.

‘Picturing Christmas’ a mixed show opens on Thursday, 27 November to Sunday, 7 December.

All exhibitions are open Thursdays to Sundays, from 10.00am to 5.30pm. The gallery is closed Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays except by special appointment.

As those who have participated in a class or workshop at The Slade Centre will attest, The Studio is the perfect space in which to work and is available for hire to artists for short, concentrated periods of work. It is hoped that this will be of benefit to those who wish to take time away from their normal working schedules, perhaps to complete a body of work; to develop new ideas; or rethink their practice in some way.

Elaine Collett, who teaches the art classes at The Slade Centre, has made use of The Studio to complete a major body of work which continues explorations she began during an MA at Arts University Bournemouth. She speaks enthusiastically of her time working in The Studio and says...

‘If it hadn’t been for this space I would never have been able to carry on with the work which I started at Bournemouth. I have been able to paint much larger pieces than would otherwise have been possible, and the peace and quiet has enabled me to focus properly without interruptions. And of course the light is fantastic!’

Elaine held a solo exhibition of her work in early October this year. Entitled Beyond Green, details of this exhibition and the works shown are available on request.
