Shaolin Wahnam

For many westerners, it is difficult to appreciate the depth and potential influence of disciplines such as Kung Fu on both mind and body.

Thanks to martial arts movies Kung Fu is seen as solely a form of combat or self defence; the idea of 'chi' may be loosely understood as a life force and the basis of acupuncture; and zen remains an impenetrable spiritual practice - maybe something to do with motorcycle maintenance.

Shaolin Wahnam interconnects these three aspects into one discipline, and the result is a fusion of improved health and fitness, self-defence capability, character development and spiritual development.

Jordan Francis, who runs the Wednesday evening classes at The Slade Centre in Gillingham has the benefit of having trained with Wong Kiew Kit who founded the Shaolin Wahnam school in 1982. The classes run from 7pm to 9pm each Wednesday.

The Shaolin Monastery in China was the original source of the teaching behind Shaolin Wahnam. Its teaching developed over a period of 1500 years before the monastery was sacked and destroyed in the 1920s. Recently the Chinese government has rediscovered the tourism potential of Shaolin and redeveloped the area. While these developments are largely irrelevant to Shaolin Wahnam as a discipline, the Shaolin name is an important recognition of the source of the school's teaching.

The Wahnam name is a combination of the names of Wong Kiew Kit's two Shaolin teachers.
