The Licensing Act 2003 came into force on 25 November 2005. As a result
of this act the film society at The Slade Centre would now need to apply
for a premises licence to recommence our film programme in September
2006. The first year cost of the licence would be £370 and the
application procedure is complex and time consuming - essentially it is
the same process that any pub or concert venue would now need to go
through. As a result we have reluctantly decided to abandon the film events that we have organised at the Centre since 2001. We would like to thank everyone who has attended and enjoyed film at the Slade Centre over the past few years, and particularly to thank Paul Schilling for his enthusiastic help in sourcing and running the film evenings here. Paul is still involved with the much larger film society in Shaftesbury, and that society benefits from being hosted by the Shaftesbury Arts Centre. With a much broader range of activities they can justify the time and expense associated with the new licensing regime. Moviola too continues to prosper, and village halls, while still having the burden of more and more red tape are at least exempt from paying the license fees. Taken together with the demise of North Dorset's Adult Education department and the cancellation of art classes, we are planning to review the business/ arts mix at The Slade Centre, but no firm decisions have been taken just yet. Once again many thanks for your support. Graham Barnes
