The Slade Building was built in 1905 by the Edwardian entrepreneur, William Slade. The building is in The Square, in Gillingham's old town, near St Mary's Church. Charly's bar (formerly Revolutions) is on the ground floor of the building. The Gillingham Tandoori (far left) opposite the building is recommended. The Phoenix is popular with its elderly clientele and has an outside drinking area on The Square - a nice situation which compensates for the lack of choice of beers (almost everything Hall & Woodhouse in the area) and a somewhat unpredictable landlord. The Red Lion is close by (jaded but friendly; Sky TV). The Wine Bar in nearby Queen St (formerly the Smouldering Boulder) has a bit of class and a nice deck out the back for the summer if it ever arrives. Eat at the Tandoori or the Wine Bar; or the takeaway pizzas are good. There are car parking spaces for 25 vehicles at the rear of the building contributing to the NDDC's final salary pension scheme for deserving car park attendants. There is a location map here.
